Nineth Entry - Rules to RULE The School

We are told by our lecturer to evaluate an article entitled "Please, let me go to your school" based on the 10 rules of Critical Literacy.

1. Topic
- The article focuses on the discrimination of a 6-year old girl who cannot enter in a school because of her incapability.

2. Content
- The article covers about Scarlett Finney, a 6-year old girl who cannot been accepted to register in The Hills Grammar School, as the school refused to enroll her. She are able to walk short distances and use ordinary toilet although she was born with a lesion in her spine which caused paralysis of her feet and incontinence. Plus, she is also not intellectually disable and capable to learn. The problem faced by the little girl is the birocracy issue regarding that particular school.

3. Source
- The articles comes from the Sydney Morning Herald (18 September 1998) and the author of the article is Adele Holin.

4. Audience
- The article is written for public, and it is not refer to professional workers. It is because the usage of words in the article is simple, and no scientific or mathematical terms used by the author. This article also for parents with inability children or administrator of inability school.

5. Rhetorical Function
- The article is designed to persuade the reader about the discrimination made by the authorities to the girl.

6. Purpose
- The article is aimed to persuade the parents staff of high education about the incapable children who has been discriminated by The Hills Grammar School.

7. Perspective
- The stance taken in the article is condemned. The writer was trying to condemn the Ms Kate Eastman, the Barrister of the school because of her unwillingness to conform the mother's intention.

8. Positioning
- The article describes the feeling of being a mother of an incapable daughter who are rejected from a famous and prestigue institution for disable person. The discrimination increase the anger of the mother who condemn the school as the rules and regulations are not sincere to teach these kind of people.

9. Impact
- The impact to the reader is to give awareness that these kind of discrimination still exist in our social life. The article also can motivate the parents to condemn the school as the rules that they made are false and the discrimination should not happen.

10. Visual Literacy
- The visual aspects of the text are significant because the writer use a sympathetic expression as if the girl is begging to enter the school. The picture that shows a cute little girl who is smiling also shows that the writers intention to get the reader's attention regarding the girl's problem.
